As we mark Remembrance Day for 2021, Community Corrections has been playing their part to honour those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect us.
People undertaking Community Service Orders have been tending the graves of our fallen soldiers since June 2017, in partnership with the Central Coast Centenary Committee and the Ulverstone RSL.
Work undertaken at this site includes repairing and cleaning grave sites and headstones, general lawn maintenance and weeding, gravelling of gravesites, path repair, and general beautification activities.
The Ulverstone cemetery is a large site, tended mainly by local volunteers. The additional work undertaken by Community Corrections, through the community service program, ensures that the site is accessible by the local community throughout the year.
The Ulverstone cemetery houses a number of gravesites of veterans, including for people who served in both World Wars and the Boer War. The heritage of the site is of particular significance within the local community, who continue to proactively support events to honour and remember fallen soldiers interred at the cemetery.
I wish to commend all those involved in this project which helps the community remember the sacrifices of our fallen soldiers. This is another important and meaningful away that offenders can complete their ordered community service hours by undertaking work that is of benefit to their local community.
