Following its success last year, Sutherland Shire Council is pleased to announce the return of the annual Community Grants and Subsidies Program and is welcoming applications from local not-for-profit organisations who have a great idea for a local community initiative.
Sutherland Shire Council created the program to support and empower the local community by funding a range of projects that contribute to a connected, supportive, caring, inclusive and engaged community.
Sutherland Shire Mayor, Councillor Carmelo Pesce said this program allowed Council to get behind a great range of organisations.
“Last year, grants were allocated to 39 community-based organisations, to be used to implement 43 projects designed to build a sense of community, improve health and well-being and strengthen community connections through shared cultural experiences,” he said.
“I am so proud that through this program we can support so many local groups who help people right across our community, from seniors support groups to youth services, musical societies, art groups and disability support groups.
“I’m excited to see what initiatives will be developed this year.”
2018 recipient, Skillz4me Inc., received a grant for their innovative program that combines sports, fun and therapy to achieve outcomes for children on the Autism Spectrum or with additional needs. Skillz4me sessions focus on building confidence, improving social skills, coordination and balance, stimulating neural pathways and eye tracking and concentration.
Fellow recipients, Sutherland Shire Carer Support Service Inc. were pleased to receive a grant for their Carer Coaching and Peer Support Program Pilot; designed to support unpaid carers and build their capacity and reduce stress and social isolation.
Additionally, our cultural community was also supported with recipients, Endeavour Harmony Chorus, thrilled to be able to provide members with education in music, singing and showmanship and to continue entertaining the community thanks to their $7,000 grant.
“I consider myself very fortunate to belong to an organisation that puts such a lot of emphasis on education and continual improvement and it has been really exciting to have the opportunity to hear from some of the world’s best exponents of the barbershop style and work with them on building our skills” said Lyndel Short from Endeavour Harmony Chorus.
Applications open Monday 4 March 2019 and eligible organisations can submit up to two applications, each for a maximum of $20,000.
