Council’s community grants program is a wonderful partnership between council and community that helps bring valuable local projects to life.
Local artist David Aldridge was the recipient of a Community Arts Grant in the 2016/17 round of funding and over the past two years has thrown himself into creating an extraordinary piece of art.
David has painted a 35-metre-long (and 1.5-metre-high) mural at the Mount Rothwell Biodiversity Interpretation Centre, near the You Yangs.
Mount Rothwell is a privately-owned sanctuary and is the largest feral predator free ecosystem in Victoria. With volunteer support, this property specialises in breeding and protecting threatened species.
The composition David has created features many of the animals that are self-sustaining and coexist at Mt Rothwell, in a day to night scene.
In David’s mural the viewer can see rare or endangered creatures as varied as the Eastern Barred Bandicoot, Southern Brush-tailed Rock-Wallaby, Rufous Bettong and Eastern Quoll.
The mural was official opened Thursday 19 September, 2019.
