The Adaminaby community and stakeholders will be asked for their opinion in assessing options for the redesign of the final paintwork on the recently-restored Adaminaby Big Trout.
The restoration was completed in December 2023, importantly addressing the landmark’s structural integrity issues and ability to withstand the elements into the future. However, the colour scheme raised some concerns by the community, fishers and stakeholders.
Recognising the Big Trout’s importance to the community and its place as a significant regional symbol, Council is committed to making some changes to the colour scheme to better meet community expectations.
‘Following feedback on the initial paintwork, we are taking steps to better involve the community in shaping the Big Trout’s image, we recognise that some of the suggestions from the community have merit and we have now commissioned various digital design concepts that will better reflect community views that have been shared by our local community and anglers said Mayor Chris Hanna.
‘We want the new finish to be something our residents can be proud of, and our very large fishing community, both local and visiting have something they take pride in.’
In consultation with expert conservators and a widely respected marine artist, there will be a range of new design proposals presented to the community and stakeholders including the families of concept creators, Leigh Stewart and Andy Lomnici. These will be finalised next month for the community to have their say on the designs, and provide feedback.
In consultation with the community, the final design will be selected by end of April with painting expected to be in done as weather permits before winter.
Council understands the Big Trout’s significance as a community icon and tourist attraction. By working together with our community, we are confident that this important part of our region will be looking its best for many decades to come.
‘We are really lucky to have such an engaged community here in the Snowy Monaro,’ said Mayor Hanna. ‘Your concerns have been heard and we are responding to your feedback, the Big Trout’s future as a famous and beloved landmark is something we are committing to get right.’
A further update will be issued in the coming weeks when the new designs are ready, and the consultation website goes live for the community to have their say.
