Just like watching a cricketer reaching a half century, community spirits are high as residents watch Malpas Dam reach 50 percent today.
Storage levels in Guyra, Malpas and Puddledock dams have steadily increased with recent rainfall, however, Level 5 restrictions remain across the Armidale region.
Armidale Regional Council Mayor Simon Murray said this is great news for our region and the community should be proud of their water conservation efforts.
“While it’s a feel good moment and the rain has provided some much needed relief for residents, we aren’t out of the woods yet,” he said.
Council is assessing long-term weather forecasts and monitoring water quality and water consumption patterns to ensure long-term water security before water restrictions can be eased.
“We’re still in the summer season and the Bureau of Meteorology outlook remains for average rainfall at best,” Councillor Murray said.
“Residents and businesses across the region have embraced water efficiency to extend town water supplies but we need to be confident we can continue to conserve water and our local economy remains operable”.
Council is urging residents to continue to conserve water to maintain or better current water usage of approximately 135 litres per person per day to conserve supplies.
