Mornington Peninsula Shire congratulates local finalists announced in the 2019 Tidy Towns – Sustainable Communities Awards.
Peninsula entrants made up 10% of all finalists announced earlier this week by Keep Victoria Beautiful.
Eight projects from across the Peninsula were announced as finalists in the program that recognises communities taking action to protect and enhance local environments in regional areas across Australia.
Winners will be announced at the State Awards held in Dimboola on 26 October.
Shire Mayor David Gill congratulated all entrants and finalists for this accomplishment.
“I am extremely proud of our community for their dedication to preserving and protecting our Peninsula.
“The Shire proudly supports Keep Victoria Beautiful and the awards which encourage our community to lead the way on sustainable action.
“Again, well done to everyone and on behalf of the community we wish you all the very best for the finals in Dimboola.”
Briars Ward Councillor and Council’s representative for the Keep Victoria Beautiful Tidy Towns Awards Bev Colomb said “we are very lucky to have such a dedicated and passionate group of community members who work tirelessly to protect the values of the Shire and its environment”.
Fellow Council representative for the Keep Victoria Beautiful Tidy Towns Awards and Briars Ward Councillor Rosie Clark added “congratulations to all of our local category finalists we are all so proud of the work you do within our community”.
Josie Jones, Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Citizen of the Year and representative for The Peninsula’s Last Straw said “there is no better time for community advocacy, to support the elimination of single use plastics. We have successfully demonstrated in the campaign, that working together, we can make an incredible positive change for our future generations, today”.
The Peninsula’s Last Straw is a community led project announced as one of two finalists for the Litter Prevention Award.
The project is running a free workshop at 10am on Tuesday 3 September at Mount Martha Surf Life Saving Club for businesses from Mount Martha and Mornington wanting to learn more about becoming plastic straw free.
