Tropicana, the Rockhampton Region’s free family-friendly festival, kicks off at the beautiful Botanic Gardens in less than 48 hours.
Council’s Environment Spokesperson Councillor Drew Wickerson said people could expect a variety of activities and fun for all the family.
“We have such a great program lined up!
“Kids can let their imagination and creativity run wild in the nature play zone thanks to Nature Play Queensland. Don’t forget you can also bring along a completed Nature Play Passport for a free badge and a chance to win a prize pack.
“There are some great workshops happening too. Local artists Ainslie McMahon and Kelly-Dee Knight will help you create beautiful botanical wall hangings and leaf rubbings, and you can get up close and personal with wildlife thanks to Little Aussie Encounters.
“Capricornia Catchments will show you how to create a budding butterfly sanctuary, bug hotel, frog haven, busy bee factory, bird choir or nesting place for wildlife in your very own backyard.
“We will also be announcing the winners of Council’s ‘Sustainability in Action’ Schools Calendar Competition, and celebrating the schools across the region who have implemented some great sustainability initiatives.
“You will be able to meet some of the incredible local organisations working to protect, maintain, and enhance our local natural environment too. Find out what they’re working on, and how you can get involved, right here in our region.”
“All this and I haven’t even mentioned the food, music from Junkyard Beats, a live show for kids, and a chance to plant native plants along the lagoon and even take some home for your own garden.
“Research shows that spending time playing and learning in the natural world is good for both our physical and mental health, so come on down this Saturday and enjoy a jam packed day at our beautiful Botanic Gardens.”
Tropicana will be held at the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens from 9am to 2pm on Saturday, 14 September. Parking is available at Blackall Street and a free shuttle will take you to the event from there.
