The next stage in the revitalisation of the Shoalhaven River Road foreshore is a step closer today, with the Shoalhaven City Council commencing construction on the project.
The Shoalhaven Heads River Road Foreshore Precinct project was awarded $1.213 million from the NSW Government’s Restart NSW program, specifically the Regional Growth Environment and Tourism Fund.
Shoalhaven City Council has contributed a further $873,776 to this project. Shoalhaven City Council’s Mayor, Amanda Findley said, “This is an important project for our community, for both the environment and for tourism.
“The River Road drainage improvement work is scheduled to commence from early October 2020. Foreshore precinct construction and associated works will continue through 2020 and the project is scheduled to be completed by mid-2021, weather permitting,” she said.
Member for Kiama Mr Gareth Ward congratulated Shoalhaven City Council and said the project will provide environment and tourism infrastructure that will activate kilometer of the foreshore along River Road.
“The foreshore area has been subject to ongoing erosion and degradation from recent severe storm and flood events,” Mr Ward said.
“The Shoalhaven Heads River Road Foreshore Precinct project will include works that will address the erosion and degradation issues as well as consolidate and improve the stormwater detention and discharge outlets.
“It will also provide more recreation facilities for locals and visitors, including a new boardwalk, viewing platform, and improved access to existing boat ramps, playgrounds, parkland and fishing and boating facilities.”
Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Mr John Barilaro said the $1.7 billion Regional Growth Environment and Tourism Fund was part of the NSW Government’s effort to drive economic growth through environment and tourism infrastructure that creates jobs in regional NSW.
“Regional tourism contributes billions of dollars to the NSW economy, employing tens of thousands of people,” Mr Barilaro said.
“We’re pleased to support this project to make the Shoalhaven Heads River Road foreshore precinct, more attractive and accessible to locals and visitors.”
