Construction of new lap pool to commence at Arena Joondalup

  • Construction is set to commence on the new 10-lane lap pool at Arena Joondalup (formerly HBF Arena)
  • The project is scheduled for completion in early 2026
  • Funding for the demolition, design and construction has been provided by the Cook Government

Construction is about to begin on a new 10-lane lap pool at Arena Joondalup (formerly HBF Arena), offering a modernised swimming facility that will serve Perth’s northern suburbs for decades to come.

The project, funded by the Cook Government, is scheduled to commence in December 2024, with completion in early 2026.

This new facility will provide significant benefits to the local community, offering accessibility and safety upgrades, improved competition features and a better overall experience for swimmers and spectators.

The new lap pool will complement the recently refurbished family leisure pool. As part of the project, both pools will feature advanced drowning prevention technology designed to quickly alert lifeguards to swimmers in need of assistance.

The pool includes 10 lanes, each 2.25m wide, with a deepened shallow end to accommodate starting blocks at both ends.

A new submersible dividing wall enables the pool to be configured for multipurpose use or to be expanded to 20 lanes in short course mode, enhancing its adaptability for a range of activities and events.

The addition of both an access ramp and stairs will significantly improve accessibility, allowing users with mobility challenges to enter and exit the water independently, eliminating reliance on the previously used pool hoist.

The expanded aquatic hall offers additional pool deck space, while the new grandstand features accessible seating for wheelchair users and companions.

The timing rooms and Arena Swim Club office will be refurbished, while a 220m2 extension will provide storage space, a maintenance washdown area, and improved driveway access.

The larger LED video display on the western wall will provide information and race results, elevating the event experience for all.

Further enhanced facilities include updated changing rooms with universal access toilets and an upgraded HVAC system to ensure comfort for swimmers and spectators alike.

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

“This is an exciting day for swimmers in the northern suburbs. With funding from the Cook Government, construction will soon begin on a modern lap pool at Arena Joondalup, serving the community for decades to come.

“The new pool is an upgrade in every way, offering more space, new competition facilities, safety technology, a video scoreboard, new artwork, and significantly improved accessibility both in and out of the water.

“Swimming is a cherished part of Australian culture, and this new facility will ensure people of all ages can enjoy its many benefits.”

As stated by Joondalup MLA Emily Hamilton:

“We are excited to unveil the new design for the Arena Joondalup pool, which will allow residents to enjoy the many benefits of an active lifestyle through swimming.

“As a key sports hub for the northern suburbs, Arena Joondalup’s new lap pool will provide the top-tier facilities our community deserves.”

As stated by VenuesWest CEO David Etherton:

“Firstly, the staff at VenuesWest, particularly those who work at Arena Joondalup, continue to be thankful to our members and the community for their patience as we construct a new pool that will serve the northern suburbs of Perth for decades to come.

“This modern pool design will meet the needs of the community in ways that our previous pool did not.

“What we love about the venue is the incredible support we have from our members, customers, and staff, and we can’t wait to see how this pool will enrich the lives of this community.”
