The ATO is inviting the community to help shape future interactions with the ATO by providing their feedback and views on the Taxpayers’ Charter (the Charter).
The Charter aims to help people understand their rights and obligations, what they can expect from their interactions ATO, and what to do if they are not satisfied.
First published in 1997, the Charter is reviewed regularly to ensure the ATO is meeting the community’s expectations and reflects the modern tax, superannuation, and registry systems.
As part of this review, public consultation has now commenced and people are encouraged to submit their feedback on the Charter.
ATO Assistant Commissioner Katherine Philp said the ATO’s focus on making interactions simpler, tailored and streamlined meant the tax, superannuation and registry systems had significantly changed and improved since the last review of the Charter in 2018.
“The Taxpayers’ Charter explains what people can expect during their interactions with ATO, as well as their rights and obligations,” Ms Philp said.
“As part of this review of the Charter we want to hear from all members of the community.
“Even if you have never provided feedback to the ATO before or do not often interact with us, your feedback and input into the review can help shape the ATO’s approach moving forward.”
The review of the Charter will help ensure the Charter effectively:
- meets community expectations about how the ATO engages with people in its administration of the tax, super and registry systems
- accurately reflects what people can expect from the ATO when dealing with us
- assists ATO staff in their interactions with the community, and
- fulfils its purpose of informing the public of their rights when dealing with the ATO.
