Council has reviewed and updated its Memorials on Community Land Policy with the view to providing compassionate, consistent and accountable guidance on Memorials on Community Land, installations at Road Side Memorials and the scattering of ashes on Community Land.
Mayor Bim Lange says “Council understands that the loss of a loved one is very difficult and can have a devastating impact for families and friends, which is why we feel it is important to have a clear Policy regarding memorials in the community to guide our community during these difficult times, but also to ensure we listen to their feedback on the Policy before implementing it.”
The Policy covers guidance on Memorials in Parks and Gardens, on Roadsides and that the scattering of ashes on Community Land has been prescribed as not recommended in public places.
“We want to ensure we strike a balance between respecting the need for families and friends to honour their loved one while also maintaining the safety and aesthetic of the roadways, parks and gardens within our region,” said Mayor Lange.
