Continuing excellence for Sydney in ARWU subject ranking

Nursing and telecommunication engineering strengthen performance in latest ARWU subject rankings.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2019, released today, continued to rate three University of Sydney subjects in the top 20 globally and 12 in the top 50.

Nursing was ranked twelfth in the world, transportation science and technology was ranked 16th and veterinary sciences was ranked 17th.

The ranking for nursing and for telecommunications engineering were the best global rankings these disciplines have received since the establishment of the ARWU subject rankings in 2017.

Nursing climbed 11 positions from 23 to 12 and telecommunications improved from 37 to 30 in the world.

Transportation science and technology and veterinary science were both ranked number one nationally.

Among the heavily weighted criteria considered in the ARWU rankings are research output and highly cited researchers.

“Given the emphasis these rankings place on research excellence it speaks to the University’s outstanding research capability that we perform so well,” said .

The (ARWU) is released annually by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. It considers more than 1,800 universities worldwide, providing specific rankings for the top 100 universities.
