Continuing Premier Gutwein’s proud sporting legacy in Tasmania

Nic Street,Minister for Sport and Recreation

I thank Premier Peter Gutwein for his outstanding leadership.

He has left our State in good shape and with a team that is focused on delivering on the solid foundations, he’s laid – particularly when it comes to sport and recreation across our State.

Thanks to Peter Gutwein, Tasmanians have been able to enjoy more top-class sporting events than ever before, right here in our State.

This included a record 14 AFL games including the historic, hugely successful Elimination Finals in the State in 2021.

Then we hosted the Ashes in January which put Tasmania front and centre on the international sporting stage, and the first 20 Women’s Big Bash League matches of the season.

As Minister for Sport and Recreation, it will be my mission to ensure Peter Gutwein’s bold plan to deliver AFL and A-League men’s and women’s teams for Tasmania is realised.

This will complement Peter’s hard work to secure the Tasmania JackJumpers NBL team that Tasmanians are already so proud of and getting right behind.

We know that delivering elite sporting content and improved infrastructure for our State has positive impacts at a local community and grassroots level, inspiring the next generations of our players and athletes, and increasing access to and participation in sports remains my strong focus.

That’s why we will continue to pursue our ambitious, but achievable, sporting infrastructure vision for Tasmania. We want every region of Tasmania – the South, the North, and the North West – to benefit from our sporting infrastructure plan.

Top-level sport not only provides content for Tasmanians to enjoy but, importantly, also provides tangible pathways for men, women and children to aspire to, and supports the wider effort of our clubs in bringing people together and strengthening our community.

This is our strong plan to secure Tasmania’s sporting future and I will continue to work hard to deliver it.
