Continuing to level playing field

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Sport and Recreation

Fourteen organisations from across Tasmania will receive a share in over $5 million in the latest round of funding to ensure girls and women have access to the sporting facilities they need.

Under the Levelling the Playing Field Grants Program, the Government is investing $10 million over two years to upgrade sports facilities to support girls and women participating in sport.

The $5.34 million allocated this year will help organisations build new facilities and upgrade existing facilities to ensure safe and comfortable environments.

This will help improve the attraction and retention of female members in sporting codes across the state.

Funding under the 2019-20 Program will contribute towards over $11 million in total project costs around the state, with organisations matching dollar for dollar.

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government is committed to ensuring girls and women have access to the facilities they need, and was proud to provide $4.66 million last year to 21 projects under the program.

Participating in sport is key to establishing lifelong healthy habits, and has a range of individual and social benefits, including improving physical and mental health, fostering social skills, and developing teamwork and leadership skills.

The Government has a long-term Plan for Tasmania, we are delivering that Plan, and this announcement demonstrates how we are improving the lives of all Tasmanians.
