Controlled burn in Toomulla on Wednesday afternoon

Townsville City Council will undertake a hazard reduction burn in Toomulla on Wednesday (24 November) as it finalises preparations for the approaching wet season.

Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairperson Maurie Soars said the controlled burn, to be conducted on Council-owned land, would help control invasive weeds and other vegetation in the area.

“The area Council crews will burn off is primarily used as a water treatment evaporation pond, with the fire helping in managing vegetation and allowing the pond to operate more efficiently,” Cr Soars said.

“The burn will cover just under a hectare of land and will be conducted by Council crews from 4pm and into the early evening, subject to favourable weather conditions and an assessment on the day.

“The controlled burn will be conducted away from residents and should not pose too much of an inconvenience to those in the area, however we ask the community to take precautions if they have a medical condition which can be exacerbated by smoke.”
