- $1 million grant supports D’Orsogna to expand operations and workforce
- Upgrades will increase production capacity of deli favourites
- Cook Government’s Value Add Investment Grants creating new opportunities and jobs
The Cook Government is helping a 75-year-old Western Australian company take its business into a new era with state-of-the-art facilities that build supplies of festive season favourites.
D’Orsogna will receive a $1 million Value Add Investment Grant, more than matched by the family-owned business, to upgrade its Palmyra processing and packaging facility to boost production of pork meat, salami and specialty cooked products.
As the major supplier of Christmas hams to the Western Australian market, the Christmas and summer entertaining period is an especially busy time for D’Orsogna.
The company experiences a 50 per cent uplift in volumes across its product range during this time of year, with the D’Orsogna Christmas ham range along with their artisan sliced meats, Tasty Stick and Streaky Bacon ranges among the top sellers.
As part of the facility upgrades, new automated equipment and technology will be installed, including a new Continuous Maturing Process room to accelerate meat curing and a thermoformer machine to improve packaging efficiency.
The investment will increase D’Orsogna’s production capacity of its cooked sausage and salami products, enabling the business to meet increased demand, diversify its retail-ready offerings and explore export market opportunities.
The increase in volume will see D’Orsogna add to its workforce, creating 10 new full-time jobs.
WA pork producers will also benefit from the expansion, with more meat required for smallgoods products, improving returns to producers.
Processing improvements will also help reduce operating hours, resulting in less energy use, water use and emissions.
As stated by Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis:
“D’Orsogna products are a staple on many WA Christmas tables and it is wonderful to see this iconic local company investing in the next generation of the business.
“I’m proud that our Value Add Investment Grants program will help D’Orsogna to meet the growing demand for their products, provide new opportunities for the business and create local jobs.”
As stated by Bicton MLA Lisa O’Malley:
“This Value Add Investment Grant is fantastic news for D’Orsogna and our community, with these upgrades creating 10 new jobs in Palmyra.
“D’Orsogna is a proud Palmyra company, you can’t miss the famous red, green and white sign on Leach Highway, and I know locals have a great sense of pride when it comes to supporting the business and reaching for the brand in supermarkets at Christmas time and all year round.”
