Coronavirus Update 13 May

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Health

Tasmania has recorded 1,118 new cases overnight, with 898 people recovered and released from isolation in that time.

The total number of active cases currently stands at 5,983 and we now have more than 142,000 Tasmanians who have recovered from COVID-19.

There are currently 39 people in hospital with COVID and of these, 19 are being treated specifically for COVID. There is currently one person being cared for in the ICU.

Sadly, I can confirm that two Tasmanians have passed away with COVID-19.

A woman in her late 70s has passed away at a residential aged care facility in the South and a man in his late 50s has passed away at the Royal Hobart Hospital in the South.

I extend my sincere condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the man and woman who have sadly passed away.

We can, unfortunately, expect further deaths from COVID-19 as the occurrence and peak in COVID-19 deaths typically occurs up to a month after the peak in community cases. This reflects the later peak in illness among older persons and the clinical course of severe illness due to COVID-19.

As I’ve said many times, the most important thing you can do to protect yourself, your family and the community is to roll up your sleeves and get vaccinated when you are due.

If you haven’t already, make a booking with one of the many providers across the state and get your vaccination as soon as possible.

With COVID continuing to circulate within the community, I would also like to remind everyone that it is all our responsibility to look out for one another by following the COVID-safe behaviours.

Practice good hand hygiene, follow social distancing, test when you have symptoms, stay home when you are unwell, and wear masks where required to do so.
