Coronavirus update 26 January 2022

There are 1,089 COVID-19 cases in hospital in Victoria – with 77 active cases, including 40 on a ventilator, and 36 cleared cases in ICU.

5,522,129 vaccine doses have been administered by Victoria’s state-commissioned services, with 25,465 administered yesterday at state-run centres. 4,440 of these doses were for children aged 5 to 11.

33.9 per cent of Victorians aged 18 and over have had three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. 93.4 per cent of Victorians aged 12 and over have had two doses.

Victoria was notified of 13,507 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday. This includes:

  • 6,974 who tested positive on a Rapid Antigen Test
  • 6,533 who returned a positive result on a PCR test.

Of those who reported a positive result on a Rapid Antigen Test yesterday:

  • About 21 per cent were from tests undertaken on 24 January.

Sadly, the Department was notified yesterday of 35 deaths of people aged in their 40s, 50s, 70s, 80s and 90s – the highest number of deaths yet reported during the Delta and Omicron outbreaks. 21 of these deaths occurred during the past two days. This brings the total number of deaths in Victoria since the pandemic began to 1,885.

There are 139,562 active cases in Victoria.

34,835 PCR tests were processed yesterday. The total number of PCR tests performed in Victoria since the pandemic began is 18,775,207.

Vaccination status

Analysis of data on the vaccination status of people in hospital and ICU with COVID-19 shows unvaccinated people continue to make up a significant proportion of admissions despite making up only a fraction of the general population.

Yesterday, Victoria recorded 1089 people with COVID-19 in hospital and 113 active and cleared cases in ICU.

Of cases in hospital yesterday, unvaccinated people made up 22.8 per cent of those in hospital and 35.8 per cent of those in ICU, despite the fact the proportion of unvaccinated adults in the community is less than six per cent.

People who were vaccinated with a third dose of COVID-19 vaccine made up only six per cent of cases in both hospital and ICU, yet they make up almost 34 per cent of adults in the community.

Put simply – six per cent of the public are unvaccinated but make up a third of cases in ICU. A third of the public have their booster dose, but make up six per cent of cases in ICU.

The majority of people with COVID-19 who have died during the Delta and Omicron outbreaks were unvaccinated. 53 per cent of deaths were in unvaccinated people compared to 1.7 per cent who had received three doses of vaccine.

People protected with three doses made up 7 per cent of all confirmed cases diagnosed with COVID-19 over the last week, yet again, they make up more than a third of the general adult population.

This data clearly shows that a COVID-19 case is far more likely to be admitted to hospital or ICU if they are unvaccinated and far less likely to be admitted if they have received three doses of the vaccine.

Capacity limit increased at the Australian Open

We continue to work closely with Tennis Australia to ensure this event is going ahead as safely as possible, given the epidemiological situation.

A capacity limit of 50 per cent on new ticket sales had been in place, due to the size, length and complexity of the event, which is different from a typical sporting match. We’re continually reviewing limits, in all settings.

The Chief Health Officer has agreed to allow more patrons at the Open. Ticket sales have now been paused at 65 per cent capacity, where a session had not already sold to that level.

Tickets purchased before any pause remain valid. There are no changes to density limits in indoor and corporate spaces and no changes to the mask wearing requirements.
