Coronavirus update for Victoria 17 February 2022

There are 401 COVID-19 cases in hospital in Victoria – with 34 active cases in ICU, including 16 on a ventilator, and an additional 44 cleared cases in ICU.

5,877,403 vaccine doses have been administered by Victoria’s state-commissioned services, with 9,356 administered yesterday at state-run centres. 268 of the doses administered yesterday were for children aged 5 to 11 years.

53.2 per cent of Victorians aged 18 and over have had three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. 93.8 per cent of Victorians aged 12 and over have had two doses. 53.2 per cent of Victorians aged between 5 and 11 years have had one dose.

8,501 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded yesterday. This includes:

  • 5,661 who tested positive on a Rapid Antigen Test
  • 2,840 who returned a positive result on a PCR test.

Sadly, the Department was notified yesterday of nine deaths of people aged in their 30s, 70s, 80s, and 100s. Of these deaths, four occurred in the past two days and seven occurred in the past week. The two remaining deaths occurred in early February and late January. This brings the total number of deaths in Victoria since the pandemic began to 2,333.

There are 50,042 active cases in Victoria.

23,683 PCR tests were processed yesterday. The total number of PCR tests performed in Victoria since the pandemic began is 19,290,638.

Updates

Some restrictions to ease from tomorrow

From 6pm Friday 18 February, as part of new pandemic orders to be signed by the Minister for Health, density quotients of one person per two square metres in place at hospitality and entertainment venues will be removed. Indoor dancefloors at these venues can also re-open.

QR code check-in requirements will no longer be in place at retail venues, schools (including childcare and early childhood) and for employees at many workplaces. QR code check-in and vaccination check requirements will remain in all ‘vaccinated economy’ settings such as hospitality and entertainment venues.
