New data released for Omicron BA.2 variant detections in wastewater
New wastewater surveillance data show that the BA.2 sub-lineage of the Omicron variant is almost universally distributed across both Victoria’s metropolitan and regional areas.
The most recent results, from samples taken between 28 February and 10 March, show Omicron BA.2 present in 95 per cent of 64 Victorian wastewater surveillance catchments.
The Omicron BA.2 sub-lineage continues to be detected at higher levels than the Omicron BA.1 subvariant in more than half of all catchments.
On-going surveillance work of wastewater and clinical samples in positive COVID-19 patients is being undertaken to better inform our understanding of the prevalence of the Omicron BA.2 sub-lineage in Victoria.
