Coronavirus update for Victoria 31 December 2021

There are 428 COVID-19 cases in hospital in Victoria – 54 active cases in ICU, with 21 of those on a ventilator. There are an additional 43 cleared cases in ICU. Of those in hospital, 52 per cent were not fully vaccinated and of those in ICU, 100 per cent were not fully vaccinated.

5,032,861 vaccine doses have been administered by Victoria’s state-commissioned services, with 3,798 administered yesterday at state-run centres.

Vaccinations are still available over the festive season, although many state-run vaccination centres will not be operating over the period through to 2 January 2022.

94.5 per cent of Victorians aged 12 and over have now had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 92.8 per cent have had two doses. This excludes the most recent Commonwealth data.

Victoria was notified of 5,919 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday. All cases were locally acquired. The 10 LGAs with the highest number of new cases are Melbourne, Wyndham, Casey, Hume, Port Phillip, Glen Eira, Brimbank, Whittlesea, Stonnington and Melton.

There are 28,044 active cases in Victoria. The total number of confirmed cases in Victoria since the beginning of the pandemic is 176,534.

Sadly, the Department was notified yesterday of seven deaths of people aged in their 40s, 70s, 80s and 90s. This brings the total number of deaths in Victoria since the pandemic began to 1,525.

66,774 COVID-19 tests were processed yesterday. The total number of tests performed in Victoria since the pandemic began is 17,357,466.

There are currently more than 20,300 active close contacts in isolation in Victoria.

New testing and isolation requirements

Following yesterday’s ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Cabinet meeting, new arrangements for the testing and isolation of close contacts came into effect in Victoria from 11.59pm last night Thursday 30 December 2021.

The new test, trace, isolate and quarantine arrangements have been established on the advice of the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee in the context of high case numbers and the Omicron variant.
