Townsville City Council is starting the transformation of Mount Louisa into an activity and recreation hub.
After strong community feedback, Council is proceeding with the first phase of the Mount Louisa Open Space Masterplan – which includes installing walking tracks, a viewing platform and a carpark.
The project will also give Council an opportunity to make Mt Louisa a more resilient community asset after the unprecedented flooding across the city.
Council will shortly commence detailed design on the first phase of the project and construction is expected to begin by the end of the year. Community engagement on the Masterplan will commence from Wednesday 13 March until the end of April.
Mayor Jenny Hill said she was proud to deliver on another commitment to the community.
“My team of councillors and I made a promise to the community that we would realise the potential of Mount Louisa as a premier public space in our city,” Cr Hill said.
“Council is committed to providing the best public spaces and top-notch facilities in the city and the suburbs.”
“Mount Louisa has tremendous potential and the viewing platform will look out over the city and the coastline.”
Cr Hill said the Mount Louisa project is a key plank of Council’s Townsville 2020 Masterplan.
“Townsville 2020 provides a clear vision for the future of our city,” Cr Hill.
“Council is dedicated to ensuring we provide world-class experiences for locals and visitors.
“Being able to walk up Mount Louisa and step on to a viewing platform to take in the vista of our beautiful city will be something very special.”
Division 1 Councillor Margie Ryder said enhancing Mount Louisa with new walking tracks and viewing platforms was a big win for locals.
“This gives locals living in Division 1 a more convenient option to get active in one of the city’s most beautiful landscapes,” Cr Ryder said.
Division 5 Councillor Russ Cook said the new infrastructure to be installed on Mount Louisa will help locals living in the suburbs to get fitter and healthier.
“Sport and recreation activities are a major focus of the plan for Mount Louisa and it will be very popular with residents,” Cr Cook said
Division 7 Councillor Kurt Rehbein said residents will embrace the new facilities.
“Mount Louisa will become one of the city’s most popular public spaces and I’m sure the photos shared on social media will help attract more visitors to Townsville,” Cr Rehbein said
Division 8 Councillor Maurie Soars said the Mount Louisa Open Space Masterplan would help ease pressure on Castle Hill, which has thousands of locals and visitors using the road and walking tracks every day.
“The trails and road on Castle Hill are very, very popular with walkers, runners, cyclists and tourists and the upgrades to Mount Louisa will give residents a great alternative in the suburbs,” Cr Soars.
