Mornington Peninsula Shire Council adopted its Integrated Water Management Plan on 14 December 2021 and its Flood and Stormwater Strategy on 22 March 2022.

We invited our community to provide feedback on both late last year. Thank you to everyone who contributed your thoughts.

Integrated Water Management Plan

Our Integrated Water Management Plan shapes how we will secure our water future through:

  • Making recycled water and stormwater accessible to irrigate and drought-proof green open spaces.
  • Protecting the health of our waterways, wetlands and bays.
  • Reducing flood risks through rainwater and stormwater harvesting.
  • Increasing sewerage connections and improving septic management for a healthier environment.
  • Connecting people with waterways, wetlands and green spaces.
  • Using recycled water in agriculture to support food security and economic prosperity.

The Plan brings together the Shire, collaborative partners and our communities in overcoming current and future challenges in line with local and State Government directions.

Flood and Stormwater Strategy

The Shire developed this Strategy to identify priority projects and solutions to reduce the risk of flooding, identify planning regulations, increase community knowledge and awareness and utilise smart technologies.

The Strategy also seeks to reduce the impacts of climate change and increased urbanisation by planning for more frequent, intense rainfall events and a potential reduction in permeable surfaces.

Quotes attributable to Mayor Councillor Anthony Marsh:

“With 70 per cent green wedge land and 192 km of coastline, our water and land management plays an important role for our community, economy and environment. Our Integrated Water Management Plan addresses climate change, urbanisation, population growth, greater demands for food and changing land use.”

“We’re committed to managing and reducing the risks of flooding to make sure our community continues to be safe and liveable. The Flood and Stormwater Strategy will form a vital role to help strengthen our resilience to flood impacts, and helps shape the future of our most flood vulnerable areas.”
