The contract for $1.7 million, funded through the Victorian Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Program, will see game changing upgrades to the existing facility to construct a new two-storey multi use events pavilion.
The ground floor of the pavilion will host toilets, showers, catering facilities, storage, first aid, meeting and office spaces and a flexible event space for major competitions, along with an outdoor undercover viewing area. The first floor will allow for greater use for major events including enhanced meeting and event management, media, broadcast, commentary and hospitality areas.
“We are extremely pleased to be able to award this contract to local company Moretto Building and we are eager to see works get underway on this major upgrade,” Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali said.
“The Shepparton BMX Club does not have an appropriate pavilion with amenities, such as toilets, a meeting space or catering facilities. This Multi Use Events Pavilion will ensure appropriate facilities for the club, and provide much needed flexibility for use during major events and for other users within the Shepparton Sports City precinct.”
Construction on the new pavilion is expected to commence in the coming weeks, with completion estimated for early 2025.
As part of the Victorian Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Program, Council will also undertake enhancements to the Shepparton BMX track and start hill, along with an upgrade to the velodrome lighting.
Minister for Community Sport, Ros Spence, highlighted the benefits of this upgrade for the community.
“This is the premier BXM track in our state and these upgrades will make the Shepparton BMX Club an even better venue for riders, spectators, visitors and broadcasters – allowing the club to continue attracting major sporting competitions well into the future,” she said.
“World class infrastructure not only helps locals riders reach their full potential, it provides an economic boost to the whole town, supports local businesses and brings more people to our great regional towns like Shepparton.”
Cr Sali said the overall package of works would be a major drawcard for BMX and cycling in the region.
“It will be fantastic to see this suite of works completed to totally transform the Shepparton BMX and Velodrome facilities,” he said.
“Greater Shepparton lives and breathes BMX and this new Multi Use Events Pavilion will help take our local talent to new heights. This world class facility will ensure our region is well placed to continue hosting successful local, state, national and international BMX and cycling events.”
