Indigo Shire Council has awarded $30,000 in funding to various sports clubs, community groups and service providers through its Get Active Indigo Grants Program.
The program provides financial assistance to local clubs and organisations developing innovative programs to get locals active and moving more often.
Ten out of 16 applicants were successful in securing a share of the $30,000 in funding, which will see a range of initiatives implemented including those that encourage training and participation outside of usual sporting hours and seasons, programs to increase female participation, new coaching programs, guided walks and dance classes.
The six unsuccessful applicants were all referred to different grant streams.
Zoe Gephart from Indigo North Health, one of this year’s successful grant recipients says “We’re extremely grateful to receive this funding, which will allow us to provide some come and try guided walking tours along local trails in right across Indigo Shire. This free, low impact and sociable activity is open to people of all ages and abilities. We know the strong relationship between move and mood and see this as a way to promote physical and mental wellbeing across our whole community.”
Mayor Sophie Price says Council is proud to support a program that contributes so much to helping local communities to be active and connect with each other.
“A lot of this funding fully or heavily subsides costs to participants, which is a real feature of the grant program, particularly at the moment when the cost of living is really impacting our communities and people are being forced to make tough choices about how they’re spending their money.” Cr Price says.
Cr Price says as the benefits of the funding are widespread and long-lasting, helping communities to remain connected and more active and healthy.
“This funding program also means that we’re investing in the long-term future of our local organisations that provide so many opportunities for our community to thrive.”
