Council backs growth with record capital spend

2022-2023 Budget

Rockhampton Regional Council is continuing to invest in a bigger and better region with a record $186.6 million capital works program announced in this year’s budget.

Mayor Tony Williams said the legacy of this year’s record capital spend will be better services, more industry, and more people calling our region home.

“Today’s budget continues the work this Council began last year with a focus on once-in-a-generation water and sewerage infrastructure,” Mayor Tony Williams said.

“We’re continuing work on the North Rockhampton Sewage Treatment Plant and the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant – two of the major catalyst projects announced last year.

“We’re also starting works on the Gracemere Sewage Treatment Plant and South Rockhampton Sewage Treatment Plant.

“That’s nearly $50 million this year alone going directly toward renewing, augmenting and improving some of the most essential infrastructure in our region.

“These projects will not only mean that we can continue providing critical services to our community, they’re also the key to unlocking a bigger and better Rockhampton, allowing us to service an additional 16,000 homes.

“Before Christmas we are also planning to break ground on the Mount Morgan Pipeline, and $24.3 million this year will go toward work to deliver this vital lifeline.

“It was not much more than a year ago that I stood in front of the Mount Morgan community and promised that this Council would deliver a permanent solution to ongoing water security issues.

“To be at the point we are in such a short time – having secured $3.5 million in funding from the Federal Government and $40.4 million from the State Government and preparing to break ground –is something this Council is immensely proud of.

“The timing of each of the projects included in our capital budget is absolutely critical. This program will ensure essential services for our community, create a pipeline of jobs, and prepare our region for decades of growth.”
