At last night’s Council Meeting, Council unanimously voted to make changes to its .
Council voted to cease flying the Rainbow Flag, and instead fly the Intersex-Inclusive Pride Flag on occasions when Council seeks to acknowledge the complete diversity of Yarra’s community, such as during Midsumma and on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia & Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).
The changes to Yarra’s Community Flag Schedule were recommended by Council’s which provides advice to Council on matters concerning the LGBTIQA+ community and helps to guide the progress of Yarra’s LGBTIQA+ Strategy.
The committee is represented by two Councillors and 14 community members, including at least two representatives from Yarra’s LGBTIQA+ business community and at least two representatives from community organisations who support Yarra’s LGBTIQA+ community.
Around 10% of Yarra’s community identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer (LGBTIQ+) which is almost double the Victorian average of 5.7%.
Yarra is a proud leader and advocate in this space and acknowledges that inclusivity and representation is vital to maintaining the health of wellbeing of our diverse community.
