Bayside Mayor Bill Saravinovski raised a Mayoral Minute to acknowledge the effect of domestic and family violence on our community and outline Council’s efforts to deal with the issue.
“Domestic and family violence continues to impact our community, and in recent weeks we have seen yet another young woman from our area lose her life to gender violence,” said Mayor Saravinovski.
“The Bayside LGA reports unacceptably high rates of domestic violence, leading to Council adopting its first Domestic and Family Violence Action Plan last month, representing a concerted, whole-of-council approach to this issue.”
Council is once again participating in the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign. An annual, internationally recognised campaign sponsored by the United Nations that calls for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. At the instigation of the former mayor, Councillor Curry, Council participated in this high.
“Council’s campaign commences on 25 November with the Community Walk and say No to Family and Domestic Violence,” Mayor Saravinovski said.
“I encourage all councillors and community members to join us at the Ramsgate Life Saving Club and walk to Depena Reserve where local service providers will be on hand with information on the support services available.”
“We will also be unveiling a special memorial garden at Mutch Park, Pagewood on the 7 December, dedicated to those who have been impacted by domestic and family violence. Inscriptions representing words of contemplation, respect and inclusion have been provided by the Eastern Suburbs Domestic Violence Network and are incorporated into the garden’s structure.”
The Mayor also acknowledged the role played by other organisations in our our community, and thank them for their efforts.
Council continues to work with its key partners in domestic and family violence, including the NSW Police, Bayside Women’s Shelter, Advance Diversity Services, the Deli Women and Children’s Centre, Family Co., Bay City Care and the Eastern Suburbs and St George Domestic Violence Networks.
