A recent Council decision to introduce a Minor Stormwater Capital Program means that dedicated funding is now set aside to resolve minor flooding issues across the Rockhampton Region.
Chair of Council’s Infrastructure Committee, Councillor Tony Williams, said that households affected by smaller scale drainage issues will welcome the decision.
“This program provides a clear path forward for delivering minor drainage upgrades,” said Cr Williams.
“The drainage issues identified in this program include those that only impact a small number of properties, and which cost less than $200,000 to construct.
“Until recently, the budget for these smaller works came from the same pool as the large-scale drainage upgrades we often talk about – such as the Wackford Street works that are ongoing at the moment.
“In practice, this meant that these more minor projects could be overlooked in efforts to deliver projects that were higher priority.
“By creating a dedicated Capital Program – as well as a methodology for prioritising these projects – we are ensuring that there is a dedicated budget for more minor issues to be addressed.
“This will ensure smaller stormwater issues that still negatively affect households in our Region will receive the resources and attention required.
“The minor stormwater works budget for this financial year will go toward delivering drainage upgrades on Dunlop Street, alleviating ponding issues in Port Curtis, and upgrading a culvert inlet structure in Mount Morgan’s East Street.”
