Central Goldfields Shire is encouraging local businesses to get behind next R U OK? Day next Thursday 10 September.

R U OK? Day is a national day for all Australians to ask someone in their life how they are doing and what to say if someone says they are not okay.

From Monday 7 September to Sunday 13 September, local businesses are encouraged to get involved by:

  • Displaying an official R U OK? Day poster
  • Creating a yellow display in their shop window or business
  • Hanging yellow balloons or streamers out the front of their business

Council representatives will be handing out merchandise, posters and fliers to businesses on Friday 10 September to help promote the initiative.

Central Goldfields Shire Chief Administrator Noel Harvey said learning how to respond to someone who is not doing okay is an important skill to learn.

“There’s more to say after R U OK?”, is the message for R U OK? Day 2020 and will focus on building confidence and increased skills for people so they know how to navigate a conversation with someone in their life who might be struggling.

“It’s important to make time to ask “are you OK?” By giving someone your time and the opportunity to share what they’re feeling, you’re giving that person something invaluable. A conversation can help someone who is struggling feel a sense of connection and belonging.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has made 2020 a really difficult year for everyone – no matter what the circumstances. Which means it’s more important than ever for all of us to check in on our family, friends, neighbours and colleagues.
