Swan Hill Rural City Council is calling all community leaders and potential candidates to get inspired through the Municipal Association of Victoria’s (MAV) Stand for Council campaign.

A Stand for Council session is set to be held in Swan Hill on Wednesday, 7 August 2024 at Swan Hill Town Hall PACC.

Swan Hill Rural City Council’s CEO, Scott Barber said that now was the time for interested residents to put their hands up to take on one of the most important leadership opportunities, in our region.

“Standing for Council election gives locals the ability to contribute and to make a difference, allowing passionate residents to represent their communities,” Mr Barber said.

Council has partnered with the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV,) to host regional-based information sessions to provide information and inspiration.

The MAV will also be providing a Citizen to Councillor Guide 2024 – a guide for prospective candidates to further understand the roles and responsibilities of a councillor and the importance of this elected position.

Mr Barber said the importance of leadership that is balanced, and representative of our local communities cannot be understated.

“Our Council has a proud history of effective community representation, and we rely on community leaders to put their hands up and become candidates.

“I encourage anyone thinking about standing to come along or log in to the session and utilise the resources of the MAV Stand for Council campaign.

“If you are thinking of nominating for council as a candidate, these sessions and resources will help you to further consider the broad responsibilities of a councillor, the wide range of issues you will be required to make decisions about and the time commitment,” Mr Barber said.
