Townsville City Council has approved more than $200,000 in grant funding to support several of the region’s most renowned community events at May’s full council meeting.
Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said councillors endorsed the investment for nine grants at last week’s meeting.
“By approving these grants, Council can ensure our city will continue to reap the benefits these events deliver our community,” Cr Greaney said.
“These are events that deliver significant economic and social uplifts for Townsville and include the Magnetic Island and Riverway Triathlon Initiative, Paluma Push, Magnetic Island Race Week and Townsville Running Festival.
“Councillors also approved to support Townsville Basketball with travel expenses for the NBL1 season for the Heat and Flames sides, as well as the Northern Rays to compete in the Queensland Sapphire Series netball competition.”
Mayor Jenny Hill said Council’s Grants and Partnership Program was an important asset program designed to help support groups and events that benefit the community and local businesses.
“Council supports grants which enhance the city’s liveability, encourage growth, promote safe and healthy communities, create jobs and protect the environment,” Cr Hill said.
“The Grants and Partnership Program has distributed more than $2.1 million in grants between February 2019 and March 2022, generating an estimated $10.5 million in additional stimulus for the Townsville economy.
“Each of these grants is assessed and scored on how they will benefit the community and deliver a return on investment for the community and Council.”
