It is a conundrum we’ve all faced: In which bin does this takeaway coffee cup belong? Is this fruit punnet recyclable? Exactly which plastics go in the yellow-lid bin?
We know that understanding exactly what can, and can’t, go in your recycling bin can be a little tricky.
That’s why, in a bid to alleviate some of the confusion and improve recycling habits, Cairns Regional Council has launched Recycle Mate on its website.
Just in time for ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Recycling Week (NRW), from 11 to 17 November, this initiative aims to clear up the often-confusing rules of recycling and make it easier for locals to manage waste responsibly.
There is also a Recycle Mate app available, which is free to download on Apple and Android devices.
What makes Recycle Mate so practical is that it allows users to search for specific items, guiding them on correct disposal based on their location.
Whether it’s plastic containers, takeaway drink cups, used batteries, mobile phones, or everyday household items, the app provides tailored recommendations to ensure items are disposed of properly.
Aligned with Planet Ark’s 2024 ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Recycling Week theme, Join the Cycle, the app addresses the need to educate Australians about recycling options beyond standard kerbside bins.
Planet Ark’s recent research highlights that while nearly 73% of Australians feel they’re recycling effectively, many are unaware of specialist recycling services available for items like coffee pods, electronics, and batteries.
The Recycle Mate app fills this knowledge gap, offering comprehensive disposal options for a range of materials.
