Council Land Fence Policy adopted

At last Tuesday’s Ordinary Council Meeting (25/02), Council adopted the Council Land Fence Policy which provides clear responsibilities relating to the maintenance of private boundary fences that adjoin Council-owned land, in accordance to the Fences Act 1968.

The policy outlines when Council will provide a financial contribution for boundary fencing repair and/or a replacement adjoining a Council-owned property.

The policy sets out the following:

  • Contribution requirements
  • Application and approval process
  • Fencing standards
  • Fencing contractor requirements

If a fence adjoining a Council-owned property requires a replacement, Council will contribute 50% of the cost of replacement for a standard fence. Council will determine at its discretion if a fence needs replacing.

Central Goldfields Shire Council Chief Administrator Noel Harvey said the policy would help streamline the process and eliminate confusion.

“In the past, it has been confusing for residents with property adjoining Council-owned land regarding who will pay for the repairs or replacement of fences.

“The Council Land Fence Policy now offers clear guidelines around when Council will provide a financial contribution in accordance with legislative requirements.

“Thank you to our Community Voice Panel for their contribution in reviewing the policy and for providing us with valuable feedback.”
