New speed radar signs are on trial in six locations across Byron Shire as part of a Summer Road Safety campaign which is funded by Transport for NSW and Byron Shire Council.
The eight-week trial kicked off this week with three radar signs installed in reported speeding ‘hot spots’ including:
- Tincogan Street Mullumbimby
- Patterson Street Byron Bay
- Casons Lane and New Brighton Road intersection.
The signs measure the speed of approaching vehicles and tell drivers whether they are going over the speed limit with an emoji.
“Speeding is one of the most reported issues raised by our community along with frequent requests for speed humps and reduced speed limits,” Council’s Traffic Engineer, Andrew Pearce said.
“The aim of this safety campaign is to see if electronic radar signs might be a more effective way of us getting drivers to slow down.
“The end game of course is to prevent accidents from happening and to save lives.
“Often locals are just too familiar with the road network they travel on every day and after a while they don’t notice how fast they’re going or become overly confident,” Mr Pearce said.
In addition to Tincogan Street, Patterson Street and New Brighton Road, the speed radar signs will also be installed at the following locations over summer:
- Bangalow Road (opposite Market Street)
- Broken Head Road, Suffolk Park
- Federal Drive, Federal.
