Orange City Council’s Manager of Building & Environment, has taken out a major local government award.
Melissa Maccallum has won the 2023 Champion of Change Regional Rural Award in recognition of her outstanding commitment to fostering women’s participation and empowerment within Orange City Council. The ceremony was held last week in the NSW Parliament House.
Ms Maccallum said that she was very pleased to be this year’s winner.
“Having other women’s footsteps to follow and setting a great example is very important to me, and this is what I am trying to achieve in my daily work at Orange City Council. I am surrounded by a fantastic team that does an amazing job,” Ms Mccallum said.

“The number of women working in local councils continues to grow, and I want to make sure women feel involved and keep climbing the ranks while being dedicated to their local community.”
Orange City Council Chief Executive Officer, David Waddell recognised Melissa’s great work for Council and the example she is setting for other female staff members.
“The Award for Champion of Change Award – Regional Rural was designed to recognize someone who has excelled in supporting and encouraging women’s participation n in their council, and this is exactly what Melissa does every day,” David Waddell said.
“Melissa’s recognition highlights the importance of diversity and inclusion in our organization.
Her efforts in supporting women’s participation have created a stronger and more equitable council, reflecting our commitment to progress and equality.”

Since its establishment in 2008, the Ministers’ Awards for Women in Local Government are a chance to recognise female councillors and council staff who make invaluable contributions to improve the lives of the people they represent and serve.
The awards were founded in 2008 with the aim of acknowledging the exceptional contributions of women serving in local government positions, both in metropolitan and regional/rural councils.
