A leader in skatepark design and construction will help shape the next generation of skaters through the construction of Council’s new Harold Phillips Skatepark in Garbutt.
JMAC and Convic Creates Community are undertaking the construction of the new $2.1 million all-abilities skatepark and open spaces at Harold Phillips Park.
Divisional Councillor, Ann-Maree Greaney said it was terrific Townsville would soon join the likes of globally renowned skateparks around Australia and the world that Convic had constructed, thanks to direct feedback from the community.
“At Council we want to make sure we’re investing in infrastructure and open spaces that truly enhance our community, which is why we placed such emphasis on engaging with the community when it came to building this skatepark,” Cr Greaney said.
“The community has been calling for an upgrade at Harold Phillips Park for years so it’s terrific to have shovels in the ground and see works commence.
“Thanks to our in-depth engagement we have proudly partnered with the community to co-design and develop this great new all ages, all abilities asset at Harold Phillips Park in Garbutt and I can’t wait to see skateboards hit the concrete in the months to come.”
Cr Greaney said it was exciting to be able to deliver a new skatepark alongside JMAC and Convic thanks to joint funding from the State Government.
“This amazing new skatepark and surrounding open space is a $2.1 million investment into our community that will create opportunities for people of all ages to not only get out and active but engage in a sport,” Cr Greaney said.
“We thank the Department of Tourism and Sport for their contribution and enthusiasm to invest in our community, these works are expected to be finalised by late August, pending conditions.”
Member for Townsville, Scott Stewart said the Queensland Government provided $1 million to Townsville City Council to upgrade Harold Phillips Park to enable more Queenslanders to participate in sport and recreation activities.
“We know how beneficial it is to get young kids active and outdoors which is why this project is so important,” he said.
“This was an election commitment I made to the community in 2020 so it’s fantastic to see work get underway.
“I know there has been substantial community consultation done by Council on this project too so this a momentous day for the community.
“Projects like this not only create jobs but provide more options for young people which is why I backed this project form the beginning.”
Works are expected to be complete in late August, weather and conditions permitting.
