Council is pleased to announce it has purchased the vacant block at 2A Murchison Street in Marysville in order to preserve the open space and view to Settlers Park from the main street for everyone to enjoy.
Cathedral Ward Councillor Sandice McAulay said this parcel of land was zoned commercial following the town’s redesign after the 2009 Bushfires.
‘Since then the land has been privately owned, and in 2018 it was granted a planning permit for the use and development of a café on the site, which the last owners decided not to pursue,” Cr McAulay said.
‘Following an independent valuation and consideration of the low demand for commercial property in Marysville at the moment, Council purchased the site. This was made possible without having to take out a loan because of funds set aside following the decision not to reinstate the Marysville Retirement Village Hall after the 2009 Bushfires.
‘Additionally, we used funds contributed to our ‘Open Space Reserve’ from subdivisions in Marysville. This Reserve is commonly used to help us acquire or improve recreational land.
‘Council is keen to integrate the land at 2A Murchison Street into the adjoining parkland, where many community events are held.
‘We’re really pleased to have secured this piece of land for the Marysville community, and we’re thinking about which similar parcels in other parts of the Shire might be best consolidated for public use too,’ Cr McAulay said.
