Council has today endorsed a $50,000 sponsorship of the iconic Magnetic Island Race Week for 2023 and 2024. The popular annual sailing event injects more than $1.2 million into the Townsville region each year, providing significant tourism exposure and a boost to both the business community on Magnetic Island and the mainland.
Townsville City Council’s $50,000 sponsorship will cover event management, employing a race director, and the hire of marquees, LED screens, stages, and shower and toilet facilities.
Magnetic Island Race Week runs during the first week of September and provides an impeccable showcase of the city’s natural assets to thousands of visitors each year.
Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said Magnetic Island Race Week was a huge drawcard for visitors to choose to holiday in North Queensland.
“Council is proud to play its part in bringing this first-class racing event to Townsville during the city’s picturesque spring weather,” Cr Greaney said.
“Magnetic Island Race Week is the impetus for a significant number of intra- and inter-state visitors to head to Townsville and not only enjoy all of the sailing action, but also soak in our pristine beaches, great restaurants and many tourism experiences.
“Magnetic Island Race Week organisers work to ensure that there is more than the on-water yacht racing on offer, with onshore events organised for the wider community enjoy, including Father’s Day activities like a tug-o-war, treasure hunt, markets, sandcastle competitions and live music.
“By supporting events like Magnetic Island Race Week, Council is able to further its commitment to growing Townsville into a sustainable destination that embraces and participates in the arts, sports, events and recreational activities, helping to increase visitor bed nights and increase opportunities for residents to participate in nationally recognised sporting events.”
Magnetic Island Race Week has grown year-on-year, with a record-breaking contingent of 80 registered crews in 2021. This will be the race’s 16th year, with races from 31 August to 6 September.
“Dozens of yachts are moored at Nelly Bay for spectators to view ahead of each huge race day during Magnetic Island Race Week,” Cr Greaney said.
“This is the perfect time for regatta fans to head to the island, nestled in the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, and enjoy our slice of tropical paradise.”
