Council’s Minor Community Grants are bringing people together

In a time when the world feels divided, Sunshine Coast Council’s community grants continue to bring the community together.

Not-for-profit community groups needing funding for a project, event or activity can apply for a grant of up to $2000 through the Sunshine Coast Council’s Minor Community Grants Program.

The minor grants program opens for applications again today and closes midnight on Tuesday, May 7, 2019.

The Nambour Community Centre received $2000 to run a four-week Speaking for Impact course for women from diverse backgrounds, facilitated by expert communicator Robyn Pulman.

Nambour Community Centre migrant settlement worker Linda Dennis said the funding provided a unique training opportunity not always available to migrant women.

“Course participants will learn practical skills which are associated with opportunities to obtain work, volunteering opportunities, access training and gain information about services,” she said.

“The women who attend will expand their social and economic opportunities by building their language and networking skills, confidence and self-esteem.

“The Speaking with Impact training will help them make new connections and the Sunshine Coast can benefit from the wealth of ideas, experiences and skills that these community members possess.”

Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said community groups could apply for a grant to assist with projects that benefit Sunshine Coast communities.

“Funding this project embraces the Sunshine Coast’s multicultural community, promotes access and inclusion, and fosters health and wellbeing,” Cr McKay said.

“Council’s minor grants program offers a great way for all sorts of community groups to obtain funding to help with their smaller, but important projects.

“It’s all part of our commitment to be a healthy, smart and creative region.

“If you’re considering a grant for your community group, please don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and give our grants officers a call.”
