Whittlesea Council has taken out a major technology award for its Smart Cities program.
Council was presented the Smart City Achievement of the Year at this year’s MAV Technology Awards for Excellence.
“Technology improves service delivery by speeding up communications and increasing convenience, enabling councils to function more efficiently and effectively,” MAV President Cr Coral Ross said.
The Smart Cities program uses data to improve how public spaces are managed.
Funded through the Australian Government’s Smart Cities and Suburbs Program the project was delivered in partnership with La Trobe University, RMIT University, Banyule, Mitchell, Moreland and Nillumbik councils.
A network of sensors installed throughout the council areas collect anonymous data showing how people are using spaces, air quality, water levels and waste volumes.
The data enables Councils to be more efficient and effective in the way it manages public buildings and outdoor spaces on behalf of the community.
