Townsville City Council’s Street Art program and Tours and Trails app have been awarded two commendations at the Planning Institute of Australia’s (PIA) Queensland Awards.
The annual PIA Awards for Planning Excellence demonstrate leading practice and are a chance to celebrate outstanding planning and planners.
The programs were recognised with commendations in the Hard Won Victory and Best Planning Ideas: Small Budget categories for the innovative ways they enhance experiences for locals and visitors to Townsville.
Community and Cultural Development Committee Chair Cr Colleen Doyle said it was great to have Council recognised for the fantastic initiatives introduced to enliven the city.
“Locals and visitors can explore the incredible street art on display right across the city, and can also take a tour with our Tours and Trails app to learn some history and discover the heritage areas in the city,” Cr Doyle said.
“Both of these initiatives demonstrate some of the innovative talent we have at Council and the ways this can benefit the community.”
Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the Street Art program and Tours and Trails app highlight what’s on offer in the CBD.
“The Street Art program has been wonderful for livening up the city – it’s really spectacular to walk around the CBD and see all the different artwork,” Cr Greaney said.
“The Tours and Trail app adds to this by bringing some of our history back to life and gives locals and visitors a great reason to get out and explore the city.”
Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Les Walker said the awards show how important it is for Council divisions to work together.
“These projects were created collaboratively by Planning, Libraries and Galleries and the end result has been programs that help tell the story of Townsville, enhance our lifestyle and enliven our CBD,” Cr Walker said.
