Two parcels of private land at the Southern entrance into Chiltern have been purchased at auction today by Indigo Shire Council.
The two lots, one 9.50 hectares and the other 8.49 hectares, only metres from the town centre, were secured by Council for a total of $945,000.
Mayor Bernard Gaffney said the purchase is extremely important for the future of Chiltern, with Council to undertake detailed master planning, in consultation with the community, to determine the long term strategic land use needs of the township.
“The local community has been advocating for activation of industrial land for more than twenty years, Cr Gaffney said.
“We will be undertaking significant community engagement to determine what is best for Chiltern. This could be opportunities for industrial expansion, residential development or a combination of both.”
“We’ve been actively seeking opportunities to secure land in Chiltern and both the recent Indigo Industrial Land Feasibility Assessment, and the 2016 Chiltern Placemaking and Structure Plan report identified this as a priority for the town.”
The two lots are currently zoned farming zone and depending on the outcome of the master planning, Council will undertake a process to have the land appropriately re-zoned.
Lot one fronts Beechworth Road, Anderson Road, Waterloo Road and the railway line, while Lot 2 fronts Waterloo Road and the Railway Access Road.
