Council to fly Progress Pride flag

Inner West Council

Inner West Council has voted unanimously to launch the new Progress Pride flag.

“Tomorrow is Transgender Day of Remembrance – a memorial to Trans people who have died as a result of anti-transgender violence. Inner West Council acknowledges and stands in solidarity with LGBTIQ+ communities on this day and are proud of the fact that we will soon be flying the new Progress Pride Flag which rightly recognises trans, non-binary and gender diverse people in its design,” said Inner West Mayor Rochelle Porteous.

The Progress Pride Flag was designed by non-binary artist and graphic designer Daniel Quasar in 2018.

It incorporates the existing six-colour Rainbow Flag designed by Gilbert Blake, and a chevron that incorporates the white, pink, and blue colours of the Trans Pride Flag designed by Monica Helms to represent trans, non-binary and gender diverse people.

The black and brown stripes represent marginalized people of colour, people living with AIDS, and those no longer living.

“The Progress Pride flag will soon fly from town halls across the Inner West and at the Summer Hill Rainbow Crossing to celebrate the diversity of our LGTBQI+ community, and reflect our commitment to inclusivity,” said Inner Mayor Porteous.

The new flag explicitly recognises our Trans community, First Nations peoples, and people of colour as part of our LGBTIQ+ communities and sends the clear message that all are welcome here in our Inner West.

The Trans and First Nations communities are some of the most marginalised people in the Inner West and the Progress Pride flag explicitly recognises and embraces them. It shows Council’s commitment to listening and supporting our diverse community, ‘We’re here for you. All of you,” said Mayor Porteous.

Council will use the Progress Pride flag to be more inclusive and reflect the true diversity of the Inner West.

The flag will fly at various events such as Mardi Gras.
