Swan Hill Rural City Council is set to remove several Willow trees and conduct a planned burn along the picturesque Little Murray River, aimed at curbing the spread of weeds and enhancing safety for boat users.
The planned tree removal and burn is scheduled to commence on Thursday, 21 March and conclude the following week.
Council’s Director Infrastructure, Leah Johnston, said the burn would be completed under careful supervision, with the support of the Country Fire Authority (CFA) on standby. This initiative reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship and community well-being.
“The Little Murray River is not only a vital natural asset but also a popular recreational hub for locals and visitors alike. Recognising the importance of preserving its ecological integrity and ensuring the safety of those who enjoy it, Council will be taking the opportunity to remove these weeds whilst river levels are low enough to undertake this strategic measure,” she said.
Ms Johnston said that the planned burn, to be executed in accordance with best practices and safety protocols, will also help achieve the best possible outcome in the shortest amount of time, to minimise inconvenience to our community.
“By reducing the presence of the willow trees which are an invasive weed, we aim to preserve the biodiversity of this precious ecosystem and safeguard its long-term health.
“This initiative will also contribute to enhancing safety for boat users navigating the Little Murray River. Clearing the area of potential hazards ensures a more enjoyable and secure experience for all watercraft enthusiasts.
Ms Johnston advised residents that during these works smoke would be visible in the vicinity of the Little Murray River.
“While every precaution will be taken to minimise inconvenience, individuals with respiratory conditions are urged to implement their health plans accordingly.
“We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of the community as we work towards the common goal of environmental conservation and public safety.
