After Monday’s hailstorm damage across the Region, Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow is urging people to be wary of non-local contractors who are coming to the Region to carry out repairs.
Mayor Strelow said people who need to make a claim should insist on using local repair businesses who have already established businesses in our Region and give them the opportunity to quote when speaking with insurance providers.
“As we have seen many times after cyclones or floods, we begin to see a surge in South-East or out of town repair businesses flock to us to get our business,” Mayor Strelow said.
“Insurance companies might recommend these out of Region businesses, but now, more than ever, we need to make sure we are choosing and supporting our local businesses first.
“We want the businesses who are already established here to have a chance to quote first. It could make a huge difference to their business surviving in this current climate.
“We have a great network of smash repairers, mechanics and glass businesses right here, and while it may take some patience as they get through the string claims from Monday’s storm, you will be supporting our local economy and local jobs in the end.
“I encourage anyone who needs to lodge a claim to insist on using local Rockhampton suppliers when speaking with their insurance company.
“This is also a very important time for local businesses to make sure they are registered on our free directory so that they are front and centre and so locals know you’re still open for business.
“Separately, I will also write to the Insurance Council of Australia, the lobby group for insurers – calling on all insurance companies to prioritise local businesses following natural disasters.”
