At its September meeting Council noted an independent report in relation to a Councillor Code of Conduct matter, under the requirements of the Local Government Act 2020.
A report was tabled which details the independent arbiter’s findings into a Councillor conduct matter. The Act establishes a Councillor conduct framework that provides a clear hierarchy for the management of Councillor conduct matters.
“The correct process was followed in accordance with the Act and Council will support the appropriate implementation of the outcomes,” said Latrobe City Council, Chief Executive Officer Steven Piasente.
Mr Piasente noted, “It is important that all Councillors uphold the standard of behaviour defined in the code of conduct. The adherence to these standards ensures that Councill operates with the highest level of governance, with integrity and professionalism to maintain the public’s trust.”
Mayor of Latrobe City Council, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan said Council understands the conduct matter is upsetting for many in our community, particularly the LGBTIQA+ community.
“Latrobe City Council stands firmly committed to fostering an inclusive, diverse and welcoming environment for all residents, regardless of their gender identity or expression.,” said the Mayor.
“We believe that diversity is our strength, and we are resolute in our efforts to create a more inclusive and equitable Latrobe City.
“We recognise that building an inclusive community requires ongoing effort and commitment and are dedicated to this work. We encourage all members of our community to join us in this effort, and to help ensure a community where everyone can feel safe and supported.
“Latrobe City Council recognises that transgender and gender diverse people continue to face significant barriers and challenges. We remain committed to continuing to work together to ensure a community free from discrimination, harassment, and violence.”
