The City of Boroondara has welcomed Studley Ward Councillor Sophie Torney as the new Mayor for the 2024-25 council year. This marks Cr Torney’s first term as Mayor, following her election to Council.
Mayor Torney was elected by her peers at the council meeting on Monday 18 November 2024.
Cr Torney, a long-time Kew resident, businesswoman and dedicated community advocate, brings a wealth of experience to the role.
‘For 25 years, my family and I have proudly called Kew home. I understand the needs and values of our residents because I’ve lived them’, Cr Torney said.
‘Now, I’m proud to serve as Mayor and look forward to working alongside my fellow councillors, council officers and the community to advance key Council initiatives, she said.
Cr Torney praised the dedication of the previous Mayor, Cr Lisa Hollingsworth, and looks forward to building on past achievements with the support of her fellow councillors.
The Mayor welcomed the new 2024-25 committee chairs:
- Cr Wes Gault for the Urban Planning Delegated Committee
- Cr Rob Baillieu for the Services Delegated Committee.
Newly elected Deputy Mayor and re-elected councillor, Cr Victor Franco said he was pleased to be working closely with Cr Torney and the new council team.
‘I am delighted to serve alongside Cr Torney as we embark on a new era for Boroondara’, Cr Franco said.
