Georges River Council successfully obtained over $12,000 compensation for a victim whose dog was attacked by another dog in Mortdale in April 2020. Council took the proceedings following a complaint and evidence of significant injuries sustained by the victim’s dog.
In handing down her decision in Sutherland Local Court on 10 August 2021, Magistrate Carney said that members of the community are entitled to walk around without the expectation that they, or their pets, would be attacked.
The defendant, whose dog was euthanised immediately after the attack, pleaded guilty in Sutherland Local Court. Her dog had escaped from its backyard and attacked the other dog being walked on a lead by its owner.
The Court fined the defendant $2000 and ordered her to pay $12,707.30 in compensation for veterinary bills to the owner of the dog attacked.
Council stresses that pet owners must properly secure their pets for the safety of all of our community to be able to enjoy all areas of the Georges River local government area without fear.
