COVID-19 – Infringement Notices – 8 April

Police have issued two infringement notices for failing to abide by the Chief Health Officer Directions issued under section 56 of the Public and Environmental Health Act 2011.

On Wednesday 8 April 2020, a 25-year-old man in Johnston breached mandatory quarantine by leaving his residence to get food. The man had recently returned from New South Wales by plane. A compliance team attended the location and discovered the man was not there as required. He was contacted and directed to return home immediately.

A 50-year-old man from Jabiru recently crossed a Biosecurity check point at the Queensland border upon his arrival by road back into the NT. The man breached mandatory quarantine directions leaving his residence before his 14-day quarantine period had ended. Police were notified by a concerned member of the public.

The two men were issued with an infringement penalty of $1,099 each and referred to Environmental Health Officers to conduct a further risk assessment to determine if contact tracing is required.

NT Police, Public and Environmental Health officers and Australian Defence Force continue to undertake quarantine compliance checks to ensure people are completing their 14 days quarantine.

Physical distance monitoring and enforcing the public gathering limit of ten persons also continues. Territorians are strongly advised to observe the two person limit where possible.

The key message to all Territorians is to “Stay home, if you can”.

The public can be assured that fines will be issued to anyone not respecting the community and doing the right thing.

3,085 compliance checks have now been completed with nine fines issued.
